Easy access is today one of the most important criteria when designing modern buildings, regardless if for commercial or residential use. The most important element of such forward-looking architectural challenges are barrier-free entrance doors, which ensure ease and convenience of use to all people, regardless of age or physical condition. Aluminium doors provide full comfort of use without compromising design or thermal insulation.
The trend of designing without barriers is associated not only with the global trend of an aging population. It also with the growing requirements for comfort among investors of all ages. Modern architecture involves the removal of any potential difficulties in the independent use of buildings and all the amenities they offer. In addition to wide, laid out on one level communication routes, the hallmark of such universal designs are large and easy-to-use entrance doors. According to the requirements of barrier-free architecture, they should be equipped with a threshold flush with the floor.
Preferably – intelligent systems that allow operation without a key or even hands. Modern, aluminium doors are created for a comfortable and energy-saving architecture without barriers, in which every detail has been carefully thought out, including an effective sealing and drainage system. A lot of solutions fully meet the criteria of the DIN 18040 standard, which precisely defines what conditions should be met by buildings without architectural barriers and their equipment.
Accessibility without any compromises
The requirements contained in the DIN 18040 standard define the parameters that should be characterized by doors without architectural barriers. The basic requirement is adequate dimensions in the clearance of the passage, which should be at least 90 cm wide and 205 cm high. In addition, to ensure that the door can be operated by wheelchair users, the handle is placed at a height of 85 cm to 105 cm. The use of protruding sills is generally not allowed, unless they are necessary for technical reasons, such as ensuring airtightness and adequate drainage of external building elements.
Then a threshold with a minimum height of 2 cm is used. Aluminium doors used for entrances are unique solutions on the market, which harmoniously combine the construction of the zero threshold with excellent technical parameters. Some of them have the highest, 6th class of passability in accordance with the ift guideline BA-01/1. “Determination and classification of the ability to run over thresholds”. And thanks to the use of a special, drop-down seal, they ensure perfect water tightness. A similar solution of the threshold can also be used in sliding aluminium doors, achieving the effect of smooth and maximally safe passages throughout the house – from the external entrance zone to the exit to the terrace or balcony.
Effortless and even hands-free operation
Doors in barrier-free buildings should be easy to use for all users. For this purpose, it is recommended to use intelligent solutions that enable effortless operation. Aluminum doors are available with automation solutions that enable keyless or even contactless operation. A very innovative solution is, for example, sliding doors with an integrated module. The opening and closing of which can be controlled via a smartphone equipped with Bluetooth. Depending on the settings, the door leaf can open automatically as soon as the paired mobile device is within the signal range. This is an excellent solution especially for heavy, large-size leaves.
